Yet in this world, it is all too evident that the lives of Black, Indigenous, and people of color are not treated with equal reverence and respect. That many people are denied their fundamental right to a peaceful existence, from the moment they are born.

This must change.

As a community of parents and parents-to-be, we are committed to making Expectful a space that helps dismantle structural racism, providing education, and uplifting BIPOC voices and stories.

This list of BIPOC leading anti-racist work for birthing families includes national and community organizations, educators, midwives, and doulas. It represents only a fraction of the leaders and advocates who have taken up this cause before us and will continue to be updated with new resources. Where can I find more information, provide support, and raise awareness about Black maternal mortality?

Health in Her Hue – A digital health solution designed to meet the healthcare needs of Black women and women of color. It creates a seamless experience for Black women to find and connect with culturally aligned and sensitive healthcare providers, telehealth services, community, and health content.

Black Mamas Matter – A Black women-led cross-sectoral alliance centering Black mamas to advocate, drive research, build power, and shift culture for Black maternal health, rights, and justice.

Shades of Blue Project – An organization dedicated to breaking cultural barriers in maternal mental health by raising awareness and ensuring action is being taken to break the stigma surrounding seeking treatment in the minority community when experiencing complications after childbirth.

Sister Song – A national membership organization; their purpose is to build an effective network of individuals and organizations to improve institutional policies and systems that impact the reproductive lives of marginalized communities.

National Birth Equity Collaborative – NBEC creates solutions that optimize Black maternal and infant health through training, policy advocacy, research, and community-centered collaboration.

Every Mother Counts – Working to achieve quality, respectful, and equitable maternity care for all by giving grants and working with partners and thought leaders to increase awareness and mobilize communities to take action.
